Totodile’s Evolution in Pokemon ZA¶
In terms of the basics, Totodile’s evolution is not changing (much).
- Totodile will still evolve to Croconaw at level 18
- Feraligatr is the next evolution at level 30
The good thing about Totodile is that this Pokémon gets a good mixture of Normal, Water, and Dark moves earlier on. It makes Totodile a good pickup early, especially with its Dark and Water moves. The reason why is because Water is effective against the following types:
- Ground
- Fire
- and Rock
There are a few of those Pokémon knocking around in the early-mid game, so that’s handy. Also, Bite is Dark, and that counters Ghost and Psychic Pokémon. From around Main Story mission 8, or Wild Zone 4, you’ll start finding Psychic and Dark Pokémon in Battle and Wild Zones. So, Totodile is a great starter Pokémon for those reasons. Throw in a Houndoom with their Fire types later on, and again Tododile and its evolutions have a great time. The only issue is some of the main story battles tend to have a rare Ice monster, which can make that hard. It’s something to be aware of that Totodile and its Croconaw evolution will have a good time early on, but will get countered every now and then, especially with Mareep knocking around the Battle Zones every now and then.
The other secret good thing about Totodile is that you do not have to rely on poor Water Pokémon early. There’s only really Starmie early on that’s worth getting without hassle. So, Totodile can be a great choice for a main Water type Pokémon for the rest of the game. You can also use Totodile and its evolutions’ Water Gun move to clean up the purple slime obstacles on the map too.
Totodile’s Mega Evolution in Pokemon ZA¶

If you’re not aware, Totodile and its later evolutions can get a Mega evolution. This form has been added to the game as part of the new focus on Mega evolutions. It’s a main feature in the main story, and your starter Pokémon will likely be one of your first Pokémon to reach Mega status in mid to late game battles.
For Totodile starters, you can make your Feraligatr become Mega Feraligatr. You can do so with the Mega Stone, which you’ll end up getting as part of the main storyline anyway. This alters Feraligatr from a Water Pokémon to a Dragon Pokémon. This makes its only weaknesses against other Dragons and Fairies. Now, there are a few Dragons knocking around the game, such as Dragonites, so that’s something to keep Feraligatr away from late game. Chikorita’s Mega evolution also becomes a Fairy, so that’s another to avoid.
Outside of that, Mega Feraligatr is having a fun time against Steel and Fire types, along with Ground and Rock. You’ll have access to plenty of Water moves, and you’ll also get Outrage, a Dragon move that allows you to heal from attacks. You can also learn several Ice and Dragon TM moves too as you progress your Research or find TMs on our interactive map.
Mega Feraligatr will be a strong pick for general fights when you need a Mega Pokémon on the field, even if you won’t encounter too many Mega Steel, Fire, Ground, and Rock types as part of main or side story missions.
