Tepig’s Evolution in Pokemon ZA¶
In terms of the basics, Tepig’s evolution is not changing (much).
- Tepig will still evolve to Pignite at level 17
- Emboar is the next evolution at level 36
The good thing about Tepig is that this Pokémon gets a good mixture of Fire and Fighting moves earlier on. It makes Tepig a solid pickup early, especially with its Fire and Fighting type coverage. The reason why is because Fire is a good counter to Grass, Ice, Bug, and Steel types. There’s a lot of bug types and grass type pokemon in the early game. You Tepig will shred foes early on.
Also, once it evolves into Pignite at level 17, you get access to Fighting-type moves which counter Normal, Ice, Rock, Dark, and Steel Pokémon. Fighting is very good due to several normal type beasts in Battle Zones. There’s the odd Dark around too with some ghosts, Hondooms and other pokemon like that around. So Tepig’s evolutions and type chart makes it a great starter Pokémon for those reasons.
The only issue is that Tepig and its evolutions are weak to Water, Ground, Flying, and Psychic types. With Water types being fairly common throughout the game and Flying types appearing regularly, you’ll need to be careful about when to use it at times.
The other good thing about Tepig is that Fire types are incredibly valuable throughout the entire game. There aren’t many strong Fire options early on without grinding specific Wild Zones. You only really have Ember from Fletchling or Houndour. So Tepig can be a great choice for a main Fire type Pokémon for the rest of the game. You can also use Tepig and its evolutions for strong Fire moves to deal with Grass obstacles and Ice-type encounters throughout your journey.
Tepig’s Mega Evolution in Pokemon ZA¶
If you’re not aware, Tepig and its later evolutions can get a Mega evolution. This form has been added to the game as part of the new focus on Mega evolutions. It’s a main feature in the main story, and your starter Pokémon will likely be one of your first Pokémon to reach Mega status in mid to late game battles.
For Tepig starters, you can make your Emboar become Mega Emboar. You can do so with the via main story progression anyway. Alternatively, you can buy the Emboarite at the Stone Emporium, located south of the Vernal Pokemon Center. This keeps Emboar as a Fire/Fighting type Pokémon (unlike Totadile and Chikorita), so its weaknesses remain the same against Water, Ground, Flying, and Psychic types. However, Mega Emboar gets massive stat boosts, particularly to Attack which jumps to 148, making it an absolute powerhouse for physical damage. Its Special Attack also gets boosted to 110, giving it some flexibility with special Fire moves.
Now, there are a few Water and Psychic types knocking around late game, so that’s something to keep Mega Emboar away from. But outside of that, Mega Emboar is having a great time against Steel, Ice, Grass, Bug, Dark, and Rock types. You’ll have access to plenty of Fire and Fighting moves, making it a versatile threat for a lot of types. The quarter resistance to Bug-type moves is particularly nice, alongside the resistance to Fire, Grass, Ice, Dark, and Steel moves. Mega Emboar will be a strong pick for general fights when you need a Mega Pokémon on the field, especially for taking down tough Steel and Ice type bosses as part of main or side story missions.
