In the Marrow, after acquiring the Silkspear skill, advance to a chamber full of discarded bells to find a beast wrapped in silk.. Some sort of… Bell Beast? Use your newfound SIlkspear power to free this beast and the overgrown larva will thank you by running amok. No good deed and all that. This page will provide strategies for defeating the Bell Beast in Hollow Knight: Silksong.

(1 of 3) If Bell Beast immediately stays on the ground after surfacing, it’s going to perform a charge attack,

Bell Beast’s Attacks

Bell Beast only has several attacks, which doesn’t sound bad - and it’s not - but it’s still around twice as many attacks as Moss Mother had, and learning its attacks will be essential for securing victory:

  • Bell Beast Charge: Bell Beast’s most basic attack, it’ll surface after burrowing under the bells, then rush across the screen, clipping you if you don’t jump over. Stand near where it surfaces and land an attack when it appears, then perform a jumping stab attack as it runs under you. You should be able to land 2-3 hits every time Bell Beast does this attack.

  • Bell Beast Leap: Similar to the “Bell Beast Charge” attack, save that when Bell Beast surfaces it’ll leap across the roof of the chamber, landing near the opposite end of the arena. Just stand near where it’s going to surface and if it leaps into the air, walk towards where it will land and hit it a time or two before it can burrow.

  • Bell Toss:Another attack launched after Bell Beast emerges from the bell pile, save this time Bell Beast doesn’t stay exposed for long, launching two bells into the air in a narrow trajectory that bounce a few times before vanishing. Wait to confirm this attack, then jump over one of the bells after it lands the first time. You probably won’t be able to punish Bell Beast much during this attack.

When wounded, Bell Beast will roar, allowing you to score some damage,

then perform its “Rain of Bells” attack - stay in the corner to avoid most of the bells and jump over any that bounce near you.

  • Rain of Bells: Once wounded, Bell Beast will burrow, emerge from the ground and roar for a moment (allowing you to land a few hits) before burrowing for a sustained period of time, during which bells will fall from the ceiling. Lines of dust falling from the roof will mark where these bells will land, and like the ones launched during the “Bell Toss” attack, they bounce, but tend not to last as long. Seek shelter in the corner of the arena to avoid any direct hits and jump over any bells that come close, if any. Most of the time you’ll avoid everything by standing in the corner. Note that bells will fall from the ceiling during Bell Beast’s other, aforementioned attacks following this move.

Performing a jumping stab attack when Bell Beast charges,

and follow it when it leaps and land a few hits - responding to these two attacks are the safest way to damage Bell Beast.

Bell Beast Strategy

Bell Beast is large and doesn’t leave itself exposed for very long, being vulnerable during certain periods of times during some of its attacks. This is the first boss where you’ll have to learn the enemy’s attacks in order to respond to them, and largely sets the standard for what’ll often be expected going forward. Bell Beast will spend much of the fight burrowing through the bells littering the floor, surfacing to attack before escaping.

You’ll know where it’s going to emerge by keeping an eye out for the dust patch on the ground. Stand at the edge of this dust patch and when it emerges you’ll need to respond based on what attack it does: if it fully surfaces, it’s going to charge and you have time to hit it before leaping over it as it charges, ideally peppering it with some jumping stab attacks. If it leaps across the roof of the chamber, just follow it on the ground and hit it a few times when it lands. If it pops straight up and launches two bells in the air, just wait for them to bounce and jump over them. Repeat this throughout the fight. Sounds simple, but saying and doing are two different things.

Once wounded, the Bell Beast will rise out of the ground and roar, indicating it’s going to do its “Rain of Bells” attack next. The entire ground will be covered in dust, but you need to watch for lines of dust coming from the roof, as this will indicate where bells are going to fall. Take shelter in the corner to mitigate the number of bells you’ll have to deal with - this attack lasts a while, and when it ends Bell Beast will return to its original routine, save bells will fall from the ceiling every time it attacks. The same strategy works, you just need to watch for dust trails during Bell Beast’s attacks, another distraction that complicates what should quickly become a simple routine.

Most of Bell Beast’s attacks deal two tabs of damage, and given that it can surface where it pleases and cover ground quickly when it does, it can be pretty tricky to heal. Keep up the pressure after the “Rain of Bells” attack, however, and it’ll fall eventually.
