In WUCHANG: Fallen Feathers, you will often come across various NPCs on your journey. Most NPCs have a quest that spans the entire game, provided you don’t miss a step. He Youzai was Wuchang’s traveling companion and fellow pirate before the Feathering events happened. Now, they work together to try to piece together what’s happening in the Land of Shu. Read on to find out where you can find He Youzai at every step, and how you can complete his quest.

First Meeting - Worship’s Rise: Reverent Temple¶

The first meeting of He Youzai is almost impossible to miss. As you leave Reverent Temple and go through the doors to the right, follow the path, and you’ll find him by the riverbank. Speak to him and exhaust his dialogue to receive a Lantern and a Cornucopia Elixir.

Lost Package¶

When you’re in Buddha Cliffs and after you defeated the Tang Palace Maid boss, make sure you pick up the Lost Package. This is obtained by exiting the boss arena via the top exit to exit the cave. Just outside of the cave is some grass next to the bamboo, where you’ll find a pink item. This is the Lost Package, and you’ll need it for your next meeting with He Youzai.

Second Meeting - Worship’s Rise: Doomwillow Beach¶

Your next meeting with He Youzai takes place in Doomwillow Beach. When you leave the Bandit Cave, you’ll climb a ladder to Doomwillow Beach. Follow the path to the end to find He Youzai by the doors leading to Doomwillow Beach. Hand over the Lost Package you obtained earlier and hand it over to He Youzai. This will unlock the Pirate Armor Set and the Records of the Southern Archipelago (an interesting read) Key Item.

Third Meeting - Worship’s Rise: Reverent Temple¶

After defeating the main boss at Tang Emperor’s Palace, you’ll wake up back at the Temple. Speak to He Youzai in the Temple to get a choice; Tell him about the Emperor’s Palace, or quit talking. Select the option to tell him about the Palace to obtain 1x Everblend Brew and 1x Cured Jerky. Exhaust his dialogue, and you’ll find out that he’s headed to Cloudspire.

Fourth Meeting - Cloudspire: Snowpeak Pass¶

From the Snowpeak Pass shrine, enter the fort, and make your way into the buildings. On the upper floor, you’ll go across a small bridge that leads to a house with pinwheels outside. Go inside the house to find He Youzai. Speak to him and exhaust his dialogue to receive a Cornucopia Elixir.

Fifth Meeting - Cloudspire: Bride’s Boudoir¶

Continue progressing through the Cloudspire areas until you reach the Bride’s Boudoir shrine. As you do this, make sure you pick up the following item:

• Mad Doctor’s Notes - Shaft Entrance: As you work your way down the Shaft, you’ll eventually find a room that is full of maid corpses as well as an unusual-looking enemy. This enemy is the Mad Doctor, whom you’ll need to defeat if you want to find his notes, which are on one of the tables in there.

He Youzai will be across the bridge opposite the Bride’s Boudoir shrine. Head over the bridge to speak to him and hand over the Mad Doctor’s Notes as well as the Research Scrap 1.

After handing over the notes, you’ll receive a Cured Jerky, and he’ll suggest you head to Bai Mansion when you can, but this won’t be until later. The next meeting takes place in Mt. Zhenwu (next chapter), however, you can speak to another NPC, Fang Yao, in Cloudspire City. If you do what she requests, she will be present for many of the future meetings with He Youzai.

Follow our Fang Yao Guide if you don’t want to miss anything. Note that although He Youzai will still appear in the following places without her if you don’t do the quest, you won’t get Research Scrap 3, which is not only important for He Youzai’s quest, but also a couple of endings.

Sixth Meeting - Mt. Zhenwu: Refugee Camp¶

The next meeting will be at the Refugee Camp. This area is a new hub for the NPCs for Chapter 3 (Mt. Zhenwu). You’ll find him at the opposite end of the shrine, up the long ladder near the White-Robed Elder.

If you’re coming from the Battlefield Site, he’ll be in the small camp to the side of the long ladder you’ll take to reach the Refugee Camp proper. If you’ve progressed Fang Yao’s quest, she’ll be here with him; if not, he’ll be here on his own. Exhaust his (and her) dialogue to progress the quest step.

Seventh Meeting - Mt. Zhenwu: Bai Mansion¶

This is an optional step that can be skipped if you speak with the storyteller and proceed directly to Chapter 4. After the main boss in the Altar Gate room, continue through the area until you reach the storyteller outside the cave. DO NOT speak to the storyteller, but if you do, reject him for now, as it’ll send you to Chapter 4 and lock you out of some areas.

Instead, go through the cave, and you’ll end up at the Ferry Overlook shrine. From there, follow the path to the docks, and take the small boat to Bai Mansion. At Bai Mansion, you’ll find He Youzai by the shrine there. Speak to him and exhaust his dialogue to receive a Cornucopia Elixir.

Eight Meeting - Mt. Zhenwu: Bai Mansion¶

Not a meeting per se, but you can summon He Youzai for the optional boss battle, accessed by taking the left path through the tunnel from the shrine. Although the boss is optional, it adds some more lore to you, He Youzai, and the Plain Warrioress, who’ll be outside the boss room.

Ninth Meeting - Mt. Zhenwu: Bai Mansion¶

After defeating the optional boss, return to He Youzai at the shrine and hand over the Research Scrap 2, which you’ll get from the optional boss there. Once again, exhaust his dialogue to obtain a Cured Jerky. Once you’re done with everything, you can speak to the storyteller near the Altar Gate shrine to progress into Chapter 4.

Tenth Meeting - Worship’s Rise: Annalum¶

Obviously things have changed now due to the story, but we won’t get into that here. When you regain control, you’ll be in Annalum. Walk outside the house and look to your left to find He Youzai and Fang Yao (if you progress her quest).

Speak to them and exhaust their dialogue, and you’ll notice that He Youzai seems a bit off, like he’s losing his mind. Anyway, you’ll receive a Cornucopia Elixir for your troubles, and he’ll instruct you to meet him at Reverent Temple.

Eleventh Meeting - Worship’s Rise in Ruins: Reverent Temple¶

Progress through the area until you reach Reverent Temple. You’ll find He Youzai inside the Temple, on the top floor. Speak to him, exhaust his dialogue, and he’ll ask you if you recognize the symbol he’s holding.

Respond with “Not really” to continue speaking with him. After the dialogue, hand over the Research Scraps 3, which you’ll get from Fang Yao, who should be behind the shrine. This will give you the consumable Ring of Samsara: Effect. DO NOT CONSUME THIS ITEM as you’ll need it for at least two endings.

Final Meeting - Bo Capital: Capital Entrance¶

The last meeting with He Youzai is near the lift by the slope opposite the Capital Entrance shrine. It appears he’s truly lost his mind, but he gives you the Twirl the Pinwheel emote and the valuable, Belled Pinwheel. You can use the latter on the glowing pinwheel next to him for a bit more dialogue, but that’s it. If you refresh the area by resting at the shrine, he’ll disappear.

There you have it; you now know how to find and complete He Youzai’s quest in WUCHANG: Fallen Feathers, a quest line that spans the entire game, and has close ties to the lore of Wuchang herself.
