Twisted Thicketway Location¶
As mentioned earlier, you can reach the Twisted Thicketway Abyss Ruins by solving the Root’s End Ruins Puzzle, which requires you to use a pillar to turn some gears to get a fan built into a mountaintop operational again. Once done, you’ll need to jump and glide, after which the fan will propel you upwards - let the wind carry you and you’ll fly above these ruins. Carefully land on an Abyss Nexus to secure your ability to fast travel here without having to mess with the fan gain. Aside from reaching these ruins, there’s no other immediate reward for solving said puzzle, so let’s hope this place is a bit more lucrative, eh?

Abyss Kutum Boss Strategy¶
From the Abyss Nexus head north and pass under an archway to reach a courtyard where you’ll find the Abyss Kutum, a worm-like boss that you’ll have to fight in lieu of (most of) the standard Abyss Ruins puzzle. First we’ll discuss how to defeat the boss as intended, then we’ll cover a quicker, cheesier strategy.
Bow and Arrow Strategy¶
The way you’re supposed to fight this boss is pretty simple, and, if you’ve got a decent bow and have purchased health upgrades (and have some food ready to chow on), it’s not all that hard. Shoot the boss with a bow (or other projectile weapon, if you prefer) and a yellow bar will fill up under its health bar. When this bar is full, the crystal in the boss’s head will pop out and you can go run over and smack it to deal big damage without fear of reprisal. If you’re strong enough, you may only have to do this routine once or twice, if you’re weaker… well, this fight can drag on.
For the boss’s part, it really only has three attacks. If you’re keeping a moderate distance, it’ll shoot a cluster of lasers at you, dealing heavy damage if they call connect. They don’t home that well, so if you wait for the attack to start before dodging you’ll avoid damage, and you’ll just need to do this while firing your bow. If you want to be safe, you can usually get four shots off before you have to worry about dodging, the only trick (besides not getting too close and having the reflexes to dodge at the right time) is just not getting greedy.
If you try to melee the boss or just get too close, it’ll slam the ground with its head, dealing heavy damage in an AoE. Also, if the fight drags on long enough the boss will burrow before emerging three different times and performing a similar slam attack. These can be dodged much like the cluster lasers, but the camera will do everything in its power to obstruct you, and if you step one inch too far away from the arbitrary arena boundary you’ll get a 30-second counter to return.
Or you can just hit it with a tree.
Smack It with a Tree Strategy¶
Alternatively, you can just smack the boss with a tree to potentially one-shot it. This can be tricky, as there aren’t a lot of trees that are 1) close to the boss arena and 2) accessible without platforming. Felled trees are also notorious for despawning and being obstructed when you try to lift them. You also may need a good bit of stamina to shuffle back to the boss while carrying a tree - the base amount may not be sufficient.
In light of all those potential complications, de-aggro the boss by hiding outside of its arena until the counter ticks down (this isn’t going to work if the boss is shooting you with lasers as you amble towards it, tree in hand), then find a convenient tree, knock it down, pick it up with Nature’s Grasp, walk up to the boss and press R1 to slam the tree down on its stupid face. If you connect with this, the boss will sustain grievous damage, potentially one-shotting it. Nice.
(1 of 3) Either way, after defeating the boss, spot the gear-gate on the structure above it,
Restore the Abyss¶
Defeat the boss and you’ll gain an Abyss Artifact, but you’re not done yet - you still need to “Restore the Abyss”, which means a bit of puzzle-solving. In this case, it’s a pretty trivial matter. From the boss arena look north and up and you’ll see a large gear-gate high above. You need to scale the blocky wall, grab onto this gear-gate and hit it with Force Palm. This will activate the gear-gate and allow you to pick up a second Abyss Artifact near the obelisk north of the boss arena.
With that, you’re done with this boss and this Abyss puzzle!
