The Beast Within is one of the early game main story missions that can really be a challenge to beat. The mission takes place at night, and you need to hunt down a mysterious creature that you come across. To do this mission, you need to play through at night, which of course gives you trouble as it’s part of the nighttime tutorial. Here are some tips to stop you from dying and beat the Beast Within mission in Dying Light: The Beast.
The Beast Within Walkthrough¶
When you complete the Life After Life mission, you have the option to start The Beast Within by talking to Jacob in his office. If you do that it will start the next mission, and you’ll be locked into completing that mission within the allowed area. The mission also serves as a nighttime tutorial about Volatiles, so you have to play this mission at night, at least the early stages of the mission anyway.
So, to do this mission, you’re going to have to learn to use your flashlight tactically. It is very easy to get hit with chases in this mission, and lose some XP progression if you’re not playing on story difficulty. Some of the best early game parkour skills should help you out here too!
Find the Beast’s Traces¶

Go east and check the footsteps from the power line rooftop. This should complete this section of the Best Within quest. Image via Gamer Guides / Techland.
After exiting the Town Hall from the Parks and Recs tower, you will need to Follow the rooftop opposite. Use your survivor senses to reveal the footpaths. From there, you need to do the following:
- Jump the street by going southeast to the rooftops opposite.
- Follow it down to the other buildings lower in the east direction.
- Continue southeast across some power line cables to a new rooftop, and then turn west when you find a flat vertical wall to your right.
- Climb the wall and go over the shingle roofs.
- Look down and somewhat to the south to see the next set of trails.
- You should now see an explosion trigger towards the southwest. It is underneath the large bridge.
Investigate the Explosion Site¶

Now, this is where it gets tricky. You’ll be moving away from the relative safety of the Town Hall’s UV rooftop and into the dark streets beyond.
If you find yourself in a Volatile chase, keep the flashlight on and try to parkour up onto street rooftops, then make sharp turns down winding streets. You can often find long grass areas on some of the garden rooftops, or find an apartment building on a building’s upper floor to hide in. You will typically lose the chase. Use your survivor senses to take a peek at where the Volatiles are patrolling, indicated by their red exoskeleton moving around if they are nearby. Keep your light down, and follow the marker back to the bridge.
When you make it to the bridge, check for some decent loot in the area. There’s a low grade SMG in one of the vans and some ammo. There are a few biters around to loot if you can spare the energy to fight them. Be mindful of the firelight from the explosion, as Volatiles can approach the area and easily see you because of it.
Go to the Church¶

Now parkour through the pew area via the chandeliers from the stone walls from the left hand side of the image. Image via Gamer Guides / Techland.
Once you get the lead from the explosion, you can make your way to the north side of the town. Thankfully, around this time, the daylight should start appearing as you get closer to the church. The volatile chase stuff will largely be over.
When you reach the church, check the north side for the crypt. The crypt will lead you to the next objective. We recommend crafting a molotov and a firecracker for this, as there’s a viral and plenty of biters around. Using both firecrackers and the molotov will easily clear the enemies here. There’s a hidden collectible here by the statue in the crypt that’s worth getting.
When you make it inside the actual church hall room, Virals will appear. You need to parkour around the abbey room, and follow the parkour around the walls towards the wooden platform at the back of the pew area. This will allow you to parkour over towards the chandeliers, take the cable and then get access to the scaffolding to climb up further.
Train Tunnel¶
(1 of 3) You can find a hidden survivor stash with some great loot in the first part of the train tunnels area. Image via Gamer Guides / Techland.
Now, you need to head somewhat toward the Art Gallery direction and take the train tunnel area. The front entrance has a car there with a front UV light, which should help you get away from critters chasing you. When inside you need to make your way through. You’ll come across a door with a dead soldier by it. Enter that.
When in the next room, look right, there’s a door you can open that is completely missable with a zombie inside. This turns out to be a hidden survivor cache with some backstory to what happened. There’s a lot of decent loot in there with a legendary military medkit that’s worth grabbing.
Now, follow the main corridors along. The only harder bit is a larger train track area with a Goon inside. Avoid killing it with explosives as you can get charged by a few Virals here. There are a few zombies by the sides of the door for some jump scare antics if you’re not careful too.
You don’t even need to kill the goon. Just investigate the train carriage door to get through. There’s some valuable loot to the left of that large rail line too if you want to grab it.
When moving through, you should eventually find the beast, but it will trigger a chase scene with Volatiles after it. Follow the route you came from, and use the swinging bars to get momentum back to where you entered the tunnel from. This should complete the mission and allow you to return back to the Monastery for your next assignment.
