Infected are the primary threat that players will stumble upon as they explore and do missions in any Dying Light game. Over the last decade, there have been several titles and DLCs to launch under the franchise, each with it possessing various threats, on top of Techland’s other games - like Dead Island having their own zombie twists. In Dying Light: The Beast, we have a few new twists to the infected types, and even more spins on variations to match. Here’s a look at the different infected types and special infected in Dying Light: The Beast.

All Infected Types

We’ll go through the infected in order of your basic, special and then Chimeras.

Infected Description
Biter Your bog standard zombie. Comes with a few variations ranging from your regular humanoids, to your larger or fatter variations, which affect the defensiveness or speed of the biter in question.
Degenerate A type of biter, but they are extremely frail. They are the most decayed, slow, and least durable, often depicted by their thin and extremely pale or decayed appearance.
Military Biter A form of biter depicted in military uniform and gear. They often are more durable due to the armor padding, often requiring hits to the legs or arms to kill them. Their helmets can take extra punishment to the head too. They can be found scattered, but are guaranteed to spawn around Convoys as they drop Convoy Access Cards.
Armored Armored zombies, often in some form of Riot Gear or other armored protection. They are rare versions of infected, but behave like common zombies for the most part. You can often find them around major landmarks or POIs.
Gas Tank A type of biter that is either in a fireman’s or a hazmat outfit. The color being red or green depicting the variety they have. Each one wears an oxygen tank on their back, which can be detonated. Detonation alerts Virals to the area. They can also be Virals too in some instances in the later level areas.

All Special Infected

Special infected are you special mutations. These are the more elite or specialized roles in the undead horde.

Infected Description
Virals Virals are somewhat common enemies, being extremely fast, can parkour, and can deal damage. They are often killed with 2 heavy swings of a weapon though. They can be found at night and during the day. In terms of the lore, they are often seen as the most recently turned, often having the most humanity left in them that they try to fight the infection back with. During combat, you can often hear them scream for mercy, or argue with themselves shouting no, no, no. Some can even plead for mercy or run away, depending on how the AI behavior works.
Spitters Spitters are often seen as small and thin enemies, capable of spitting ranged attacks that deal Damage over Time effects to the player. They are often positioned on balconies around quest areas, or guard later game convoys or other POIs. They are fairly weak when hit and can be easily killed once you close the gap on them.
Suiciders Suiciders, as referred to by the people in the Town Hall are the large obese male variants of the special infected. They are extremely weak, but they tend to follow packs or ambush you, enlarge and blow, dealing big damage if allowed to pop. They often lurk in mid to late game questing hotspots. In previous games they were known as the Boomers.
Banshees Banshees make a return from Dying Light 2. These special infected are female only and come in variations. They can often be seen in elevated positions waiting to pounce on targets in a prone state. They can even parkour from other infected to dive into you and send you flying. They are extremely agile, and have long claw-like hands that can do a lot of damage. They are fairly weak for special infected, but are more durable than Virals and Spitters.
Chargers A form of the armored common infected, albeit even stronger. They tend to only be able to charge at you, attempting to knock you to the floor. Their extreme armor padding makes them very difficult to kill, with the legs often being the only weak spot on their body. They often come in the form of Riot Gear appearances.
Screamer The Screamer returns from Dying Light 2, albeit with an entirely different aesthetic and role. Screamers are often large male-type bodies, rather than smaller female siren-like characters from DL2. These Screamers are often depicted in straight jackets, and when alerted to your presence, scream, dealing ranged damage to you, and alerting any zombie in the vicinity to your position, and can even spawn in Virals when triggered in the open world. Lore-wise, the Screamers come from the Mental Asylum on the map, and are often found in Dark Zones or other POIs, and are rarely seen out in the woods.
Goons Goons are back once again, with their tall steroid-juiced physique making them the perfect weapon for their big stone mace weapons. These things are slow, but will do large swings and slams with their weapons. They cannot climb, but they can often swing their weapon at your elevated position to try and knock you off. Goons can be found just about anywhere, in early game main and side missions, POIs, Convoys, and even standing in the middle of the road in some mid to late game regions of the map wandering around.
Demolishers The other absolutely swole special infected in Dying Light: The Beast. Like the other games, Demolishers are back, and are complete freaks of nature. They are capable of charging, throwing objects at you, and doing fast attack combos when in melee range. They like to slam their fists down and knock you over, sending out a shockwave even if you’re at a slight distance away. They are one of the most durable of the special infected and hit hard. They are often found near major POI safe zones in the mid and late game or other areas that you visit and need to clear out as part of side or main story missions.
Volatile The apex predator of the night. The Volatile is the only monster that comes out at night due to its extreme weakness to UV. When night comes, these predators actively scout areas looking for prey. When triggered, they start a chase, and are capable of parkour like Virals. They also have ranged spits like the Spitters, and hit as fast as Virals, but with the melee damage of a Demolisher. They are extremely durable, with their health and resistance being akin to a Goon’s defensive capabilities. In The Beast, they have improved AI, making them better at flanking, parkouring and coordinating attacks with other Volatiles in the area. If they are alone, they tend to be more aggressive than tactical compared to other Volatiles, making lone chases even deadlier. The best way to fight these is through UV, trap activation, or using your Beast Mode to fight them. Otherwise, the best offense is to run away and hide.
Volatile Screamer This is a variation of a Volatile, but its profile is so different it warrants its own infected classification. These Volatiles are often found trapped in a red mucus, and are incapable of moving. However, when you get too close, they will scream like a Volatile and alert other Volatiles to the area. They are really weak compared to other Volatiles and can die in a few melee hits and are unable to fight back. These variations are often found inside caves or large buildings related to side quests.

All Chimera Infected types

Here’s a quick look at the Chimera infected in Dying Light: The Beast. Image via Gamer Guides / Techland.

The Chimeras are one the special types of infected exclusive to Dying Light: The Beast. With regards to the creatures here, we are omitting some from the list due to spoilers. But, these are the main missions ones you can expect to see that don’t really ruin anything for you. We’ll keep their identity largely anonymous too.

Infected Description
Reaper The first Chimera you fight as part of the Safe Haven mission. It’s a form of Demolisher albeit with a gas mask melded to its head.
Defect Another take on the Demolisher, albeit faster. Found in the Life after Life mission.
Mist A taller and more red iteration of the Banshee. This Chimera is found as part of the First Blood main story mission.
Behemoth Another Demolisher-like creature, with Charger-like abilities thrown on top. This looks like a Demolisher/Volatile, albeit lore-wise it’s attracted to a special gas.
Toxin A form of Chimera that is very much like a Spitter, albeit supercharged with its health, mobility and damage profile. Found during the Toxic Relationship mission.
Matriarch She is more akin to the screamers from Dying Light 2 as she has a loud scream and loves hiding in the dark. She also has elements of a Bolter from Dying Light 1 as she doesn’t like too much confrontation. She is found in the Requiem for a Scream Mission.
Wraith Found during the One Flew Over the Volatile’s Nest. This is a boss version of a Volatile, with a special cloaking invisibility effect to it.
Colossus Another Demolisher-like zombie, albeit with combined mechanics of a Spitter, Demolisher and Charger rolled into one. It has everything. It is found during the Buried Truths mission.
Chimera The self titled enemy. This is a creature that reappears several time throughout the main storyline. It’s basically a super Volatile, with some Demolisher like moves.

When dealing with Chimeras, these are essentially bosses. Consider using your Beast Mode as a solid tip for fighting them. We also have an all weapon mods and charms so you can build your preferred weapon for taking down these big bosses.
