During the missions in Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, you will have to procure your own food. This comes in the form of fruits, animals and plants. Birds are probably the worst of all the animals to get, since they can easily spook, flying away and tend to hide in tall grass, making them very hard to see. Once you get the Thermal Goggles, though, it becomes much easier to capture them.

Bird A - Parrot¶

The Parrot is a special bird that can only be found in a single area, or rather a single region. The reason this bird is special is because it belongs to The End, one of the bosses you will face during the game. You can find it during the boss battle itself, but you can also wait until after you win to still find the Parrot. Its location varies, depending on the difficulty you’re playing on, so you may have to search for it in Sokrovenno South.

The Parrot will appear during, and after, the battle with The End.

On Very Easy, you will find it on a log near the southern end of the area. On Normal, you will find the Parrot sitting on the munitions store building on the western end. On Extreme, the Parrot is in a tree on the hill/sniping point in the middle of the map. This particular location is difficult to see, so don’t forget about using the Thermal Goggles.

Bird B - White-Rumped Vulture¶

The biggest, and easiest to see, of the birds in the game, the White-Rumped Vulture won’t be seen until you reach the Krasnogorje areas. When you get to Krasnogorje Mountain Base, you will find two of these on the western edge of the map. You’ll find more in Krasnogorje Mountainside, as well as Krasnogorje Mountaintop.

Look in the tall grass outside of the walls of the lab in Graniny Gorki.

Bird C - Red Avadavat¶

Once you reach Graniny Gorki, you’ll need to infiltrate a lab. On the outside of the lab’s walls is where you will find the Red Avadavat. Specifically, check all of the tall grass throughout the outer walls area. If you have your Thermal Goggles, use them to help you see, since the Red Avadavat is quite small. You should actually be able to see the bird in the grass as soon as you enter, so check there first.

Bird D - Magpie¶

The first bird you can get in the game is the Magpie, with it first capturable during the opening Virtuous Mission. In fact, you can get it on the very first screen, in Dremuchij South. Before going after the bird, though, it’s a good idea to retrieve your backpack from the tree, as this bird is skittish and you’ll want to shoot it from a distance. Once you have a weapon, head up the right side of the area, to where you’ll go for the Kerotan/GA-KO. However, make sure you don’t get too close to the tall grass up in this little area. Go into first-person view and aim your gun at the grass, pulling the trigger when you see the bird.

You’ll still be able to find Magpies in other areas, like Dremuchij Swampland, Graniny Gorki South, and Syvatogornj South. There will also be some in the areas where you fight The End, which are Sokrovenno South/West/North.

The Sunda Whistling Thrush is first found in Dremuchij North in Virtuous Mission.

Bird E - Sunda Whistling Thrush¶

The final bird on this list is probably the second one you can find in the game, as it’s in Dremuchij North, the first area with enemies during the Virtuous Mission. In the initial area with the first guard you encounter in this area, look a little to the north to find some tall grass. This will be right under the tree with the Golova fruit hanging off of it, but the bird is quite hard to see in the cover. You can get a pair of Thermal Goggles in the same area, which can help tremendously with locating this bird.
