The Gene Grid, Rare Gene Farming & Gene Bingos Explained
Invasive Diablos Guide
There are five subregions in the Canalta Timberland - Mt. Canalta, the Cataracts, Howlinyowl Forest and Blessing Hill being the obvious, more accessible regions you’ll probably find just by running around and revealing the fog of war. The fifth region, the Frozen Grotto, is a bit more obscure, and this page will help you find the Frozen Grotto in Monster Hunter Stories 3.

You can enter the Frozen Grotto by passing through a waterfall near the Cataracts Camp,
or by climbing Mt. Canalta and finding a pit northwest of the “Lookout Point: Mt. Canalta” Catavan Stand.
Frozen Grotto Location¶
If you’re not too thorough in your exploration, you may not even realize the Frozen Grotto exists until you visit a camp and check out the Habitat Restoration menu, only to find this frosty realm listed in the menu! The entire region is a cavern located beneath Mt. Canalta and hence doesn’t readily appear on the map. It’s also quite small, being a Y-shaped cave that’s only accessible from the overworld via two passages, one out-of-the-way and the other well-hidden.
The easiest way to reach the Frozen Grotto is to head northwest from the Cataracts Camp (set up automatically as part of the story shortly after you reach Canalta Timberland). Follow the river and to your right you’ll spot some waterfalls. You’re looking for the third - and by far the largest - waterfall to the northwest. An entrance to the Frozen Grotto is beyond this waterfall - just run on through! Easy, if you know it’s there!
Alternatively, if you’re wise enough not to try to run through every deluge you see pouring down the sheer side of a mountain, you can turn your gaze to loftier entrances. Northwest of the “Lookout Point: Mt. Canalta” Catavan Stand you’ll find a hole descending into the heart of the mountain (this is north of the Mt. Canalta Camp, when you’ve established it). Just drop down the hole and you’ll bein the Frozen Grotto, albeit in a location that makes you very likely to end up in a fight with the region’s feral monsters, Feral Tetranadon.
Inside the Frozen Grotto you’ll find a Feral Tetranadon.
Defeat this monster and you’ll set up a Camp!
Feral Tetranadon¶
The Feral Tetranadon isn’t the most dangerous of foes - certainly not in the same league as the Feral Espinas that haunts Mt. Canalta - being weak to thunder as per usual for the species and strong versus water and dragon. Thrash this overgrown toad and you’ll set up a Camp, as per normal - you can find Aurora Somnacanths, Blangos, Khezus and Red Khezus down here, so the region is definitely worth checking out!
