Catching and Defeating the Exotic Velocidrome - Letter from an Unknown Sender
Completing side stories in Monster Hunter Stories 3 will strengthen your companions, and this should be enough incentive to complete them. In many cases, there’s not really much to talk about when it comes to these quests - go to the objective marker and you’re pretty much done - but Thea’s Poogie-centric side story is a bit different in that you’ll gain the Poogie Hunter ability, which will make finding Poogies in the wild much easier. This page will provide a brief rundown of Thea’s side stories with a focus on unlocking the Poogie Hunter ability in Monster Hunter Stories 3.

Complete Thea’s first side story to unlock the Poogie Hunter ability,
which will give you a message any time you’re close to an undiscovered Poogie!
Unlocking Poogie Hunter¶
You’ll unlock the ability to undertake side stories after a few tutorial main quests in Azuria have been completed, and more will unlock as you make it to new regions - there are four side stories per companion, and most of them, if we’re being honest, aren’t terribly compelling from a guide writing standpoint. You’ll complete them just fine by going to the map marker and gathering some resources or defeating some monster… except for Odgen’s side stories, which for some reason are a bit more interesting.
That being the case, we’re not going to delve super deep into Thea’s side stories, but we’d be remiss if we didn’t cover the Poogie Hunter ability which unlocks after completing Thea’s first side story, as this ability will make it much easier to track down the game’s core collectible - Poogies! You’ll probably run afoul of some of these oinkers as you explore the game’s various regions naturally, but finding some - or even half - of the Poogies in the game is relatively simple. Find them all is another matter altogether, even if you use our interactive maps!
In any event, Poogie Hunter will give you a message informing you that it ”Sounds like there’s a Poogie nearby.” when you’re close to an undiscovered Poogie, but keep in mind that Poogies can be hidden under mineral deposits, found atop high ledges or burrowed underground, so use the Poogie Hunter message as a general indicator that you’re close, then keep your eye out for things to destroy or prompts to uncover burrowed Poogies - in many cases you won’t see the Poogie until you actually discover it!
During Thea’s side stories you’ll race the Gale Force Porkers - hit the red mushroom and avoid the purple ones,
and avoid the odd pit and you’ll do just fine.
Thea’s Side Story Races¶
Now that you know how Poogie Hunter works, how to get it and why you need it, let’s briefly discuss the races that make up the bulk of the content in Thea’s side stories. Each side story culminates in a race against one of the “Gale Force Porkers”, large and especially quick Poogies who must be bested in a race before they’ll capitulate. These races are simple, two lap affairs - you’re stuck using Ratha as your mount (save for the fourth race, which we won’t spoil) and for the most part your sole objective will be to collect red mushrooms as you race for a speed boost while avoiding purple mushrooms, which slow you down. Unless you run into a wall or something, nothing else really matters, so just collect every red mushroom on the track and you’ll win.
The first race only had red mushrooms, the second race adds some purple mushrooms, the third race has a pit near the beginning you need to jump over, and the fourth race has a gap you need to jump and some relatively narrow passages you need to navigate - none of these are difficult, and we completed them on our first try (we suck at racing!). You only need to complete the first race to earn “Poogie Hunter”, but if you complete them all your’ll make Thea stronger and earn the achievement Friend of Thea.
