Blood in the Snow - Puzzle Guide
There are six major regions to explore in Ghost of Yotei and all of them, save for one, are readily accessible. Generally to explore a new region you just need to head to said region - areas are usually connected by some mountain pass, river crossing or other convenient narrowing of the playable area. You’ll have to sit through a scene or in some cases play through a shortish quest, but it’s often not much of a bother… save for the southernmost region, Oshima Coast, which takes a bit more work than the others to reach. This page will provide spoiler-free instructions for unlocking Oshima Coast in Ghost of Yotei.
You can get leads on new main quests by interrogating defeated enemies or by helping settlers.
Oshima Coast Unlock Requirements¶
Simply put, to unlock Oshima Coast you must complete every main quest in the upper five regions - Yotei Grasslands, Ishikari Plain, Tokachi Range, Nayoro Wilds and Teshio Ridge. These are marked by yellow flowers on your map, and you can unlock these main quests in various ways - defeat and interrogate random enemies (this will happen automatically when you dispatch the final foe in an encounter), rescue settlers, talk to travelers on the road, or just have the dumb luck to stumble upon the location where one of these quests starts. The following quests must all be completed:
- The Old Inn
- The Way of the Dual Katana
- Shogun of the North
- The Saito Brothers, Part 1 (The Way of the Odachi)
- The Oni
- The Kitsune
(1 of 3) To reach Oshima Coast you must complete every main quest in the northern regions, including quests where you’ll get the dual katana and the odachi,
This might not seem like a long list, but keep in mind that The Oni and The Kitsune quests are actually super-quests with multiple different sub-quests in the questline. Expect to spend a few hours clearing each one of these two super-quests, and that’s if you don’t do any extraneous exploration, like completing side quests to obtain optional weapons, completing [Bamboo Strikes] to increase your spirit or visiting Hot Springs to improve your max health, which may collectively make completing these main quests more difficult as well as time-consuming.
Once you’ve completed these main quests you’ll be tasked with returning to your home in the Yotei Grasslands where you’ll meet with prominent characters from The Oni and The Kitsune questlines to start (or rather, restart) the quest The Saito Brothers, which will end Act 1 and eventually lead you to the nearby Oshima Coast Gatehouse. Here you’ll need to complete another quest, The Storm Breaks which covers your trek to the Oshima Coast. At the end of this quest you’ll be in the Oshima Coast free to explore every region in the map as you please!
The road to Oshima Coast is a long one and frankly encompasses over half the game’s main questline, so you shouldn’t really be in any rush to get there unless you’re… you know, trying to unlock the map for guide purposes. But assuming you made better life choices, take your time and play through the game naturally and you’ll get to the south soon enough. Or use the information above to expedite the process, as you prefer.
