The final rift, True Purpose, concludes the storyline of the Animus for Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced, while also tying in the elements of the previous three rifts. There are spoilers for the main plot and for True Purpose below.

Once again, you’ll need to head to a strange doorway somewhere in the world, but you’ll need to reach the epilogue first. That means beating the main story of the game and rolling the credits, which comes after the Sequence 12 mission, Ever a Splinter.

This is technically the final major quest of the game, as the new chapter ‘A World Without Gold’ takes place before the final sequence of the story. This is also the only rift with a major reward at the end that you can use in any post-game activities.

Rift 4: True Purpose walkthrough

To start Rift 4, you’ll need to head to an island east of Misteriosa, at the coordinates (363,176). Based on my own experience, it’s a fairly stormy part of the seven seas, so prepare to fight against those strong winds. As you approach the coordinates, you can dock where the weird Animus-like blocks appear, and follow the path to enter the doorway.

The location of the final rift in the game - True Purpose

You’ll be taken to a theater, where Ego asks an audience of avatars to join her, showcasing the failures of Edward, Blackbeard, and Mary Read from the previous rifts. As you walk up to the stage, the game will go a little glitchy - this isn’t you. It’s an intentional part where the crow has come to save you, forcing an in-game menu to pop up. You can’t select any of the options until he’s done talking, in which a third option, ‘Fight Back’, appears. Select it to return to the rift.

Fight the enemies, now that you’re an assassin again, and head towards a lift to reach the higher parts of the stage. Watch out for the ranged enemies that will consistently shoot you, as they’ll make you fall if you’re mid-climb. Eventually, you’ll reach a hook that you can jump and hold onto, which will lift a part of the stage’s scenery, revealing a more Animus-like architecture behind.

Follow the newly unlocked path, making sure to stock up on Remedies wherever you can, as you’re about to enter a boss fight against Ego. If you’re willing to take in the scenery, you’ll see multiple buildings or views that replicate the recent RPG entries, including Origins and Shadows, for example.

This is a two-phase fight, where Ego dons armour similar to El Tiburón, and delivers the same whammy too.

The main issues are Ego’s attacks, which deliver some of the biggest range and damage of the entire game, thanks to some Animus-like abilities. Your best bet is using the four pistol shots you had in previous rifts, knocking down her defence meter as often as possible for a takedown.

The Animus is giving you a little bit of a ‘remember this’ burst, with views of recent RPGs

If you’re close when she’s attacking, she will frequently slam the ground, causing a wave of rubble and damage to pop up surrounding her. Many of her attacks can’t be parried, so it’s best to do plenty of dodge rolls.

After you defeat her, it’s a pretty quick cutscene before you’re sent back to Edward’s life, but with some extra rewards for your time…

Rift 4: True Purpose rewards

The main reward for completing True Purpose is the Dark Animus Corsair Pistol Swords. They offer 38 damage and a maximum of two takedowns, which isn’t a lot when it comes to the latter, but they offer the ability to fire bullets when using the heavy attack, which doesn’t consume your ammunition. They also damage nearby foes whenever you kill an enemy, which is an excellent perk if you’re fighting crowds.

They also look really cool.

You’ll also be able to complete the Animus Hub synchronisation for completing all four rifts, granting you 300 Keys you can use towards the Animus Hub exchange.
