This page is a walkthrough on where to find the first Rift, Wayward Souls, in Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced. Replacing the modern day storyline of the original, Wayward Souls is your introduction to the Templar’s current plans, introducing you to ‘Ego’, a presence within the Animus.
Rift 1: Wayward Souls location and unlock requirements¶
To access Wayward Souls, you will need to complete Sequence 4 first, which means completing the Overrun and Outnumbered mission. After completing the sequence, you won’t be notified of the Rift being open - instead, you’ll need to head to the coordinates (825,429), or the southern point of Great Inagua.

You can either traverse through Great Inagua by using the Pathfinder control or take the Jackdaw around to the other side of the island. If you decided to go on foot, there’s a large drop at the end, so make sure to jump off and use dodge roll before landing to avoid taking damage. There are also some Keys on the journey, which helps towards the Animus Hub’s Exchange store.
Unless you collected the letter there prior to completing Sequence 4, the ‘Letter’ marks the spot. Once you get there, a purple Animus-like icon will appear on the HUD and on the map, granting access to ‘Wayward Souls’ as a quest. You don’t need to upgrade your gear or prepare for any challenging battles right now - you can go ahead and walk through the strange portal straight away. Alternatively, it will remain in your quest log if you decide to leave it.
Rift 1: Wayward Souls walkthrough¶
Completing the first Rift of Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced is fairly simple. The Animus-like architecture of the mission makes finding the right path through easy to traverse, but you’ll need to keep your hands on the chest, as when you put it down, your Animus avatar starts taking damage over time.
As you progress through the stage, you’ll need to move objects out of the way and ‘accumulate more wealth’. This requires putting the chest down and completing minor puzzles - you’re looking for ship wheels that, once interacted with, clear the path. They’re also noticable, as obstacles in your way will have beams of light directed towards the wheels.
After filling the chest, you’ll eventually follow Ego to the point of making a Leap of Faith
After you’ve filled the wealth bar, you’ll continue following Ego, before jumping into an oceanic depth and entering a rollercoaster-like section. Your avater will be sent rocketing forwards, and you’ll need to move left or right to avoid Jellyfishes. This is seriously fast, and they do a lot of damage, so you’ll need to start moving as you pass each group of stinging tentacles.
As you reach the end, you’ll see a scenario asking the question of ‘What if Edward kept his promise to Caroline?’, with Ego speaking some Templar-like nonsense to the player. It ends with a mysterious Crow digitially appearing, before popping you back into the world of piracy in Great Inagua.
Rift 1: Wayward Souls rewards¶
Completing the first Rift rewards you with a Rare Trinket called Lock of Hair. This grants you a small amount of health if you manage to make a Perfect Parry, which makes it a great addition to your gear if you’ve got your timings nailed.
Finishing Wayward Souls also grants you some progress towards the Rift-related goals in the Animus Hub, and completing all four with grant you 300 Keys for completing the quests.
