If you’re a longtime fan of the Mario Kart series, you’ll be well aware of the existence of Mirror Mode, a fan favorite that reverses the circuits and gives them new life. In Mario Kart World, you’ll be able to use Mirror Mode in every available mode once it’s unlocked, including Free Roam! Keep reading to learn what the unlock requirements are for Mirror Mode.

You’ll need to complete both Grand Prix and Knockout Tour on your quest to unlock Mirror Mode in Mario Kart World.

Mirror Mode Unlock Requirements

Unlocking in Mario Kart World is not a quick process, you’re going to have to progress in nearly every part of the game before you can get your hands on it. Below are the full requirements for unlocking Mirror Mode:

  • Complete all eight Grand Prix tournaments at 150cc

  • Complete all eight Knockout Tours at 150cc

  • Complete 10 P Switch Challenge Missions

  • Collect 10 Peach Medallions

  • Discover 10 ? Panels

  • Complete Special Cup and see the Credits

This is quite the list of goals you’ll need to hit, and below, you can find some advice on how to go about this.

You’ll need to complete all eight Grand Prix cups (including Special Cup).

Likewise, you’ll need to complete all of the Knockout Tour rallies while placing at least fourth.

Grand Prix Tournaments and Knockout Tours

This is perhaps the lengthiest part of the process, as you’ll need to invest time in Mario Kart World’s single-player mode. There are eight Grand Prix tournaments and Knockout Tours to unlock and complete (you don’t need to win these) and they can be challenging if you don’t play the single-player modes often as the CPU will adapt to your own skill.

This is especially true for Knockout Tour, where you need to make sure you need to reach the final part of each rally and finish at least fourth. It has been known that you can exploit the CPU (as of the time this page was written) by not drifting once, this will trick the CPU and allow you to place higher. This is considered an exploit and in no way intended, so expect this to get patched down the line.

P Switch Challenge Missions

If you’ve spent any time in Mario Kart World’s Free Roam mode, you’ll most likely have noticed some of the large P Switches scattered all over the world. There are, in fact, at least 394 P Switches to locate and complete, so if you’re struggling with a particular challenge, leave it for later and find another one.

If you’re having trouble finding any of these P Switch Challenge Missions, why not check out our interactive map that has the location of all 394.

(1 of 3) You’ll need to complete at least 10 P Switch Challenge Missions.

Peach Medallions

Much like the P Switch Challenge Missions, Peach Medallions are another type of collectible found in Free Roam, although these are less plentiful (at around 165+) and are often in harder to reach places. Still, you’ll only need to track down 10 of these for the purposes of unlocking Mirror Mode, and much like the above, our interactive map contains the location of all of these.

? Panels

The final type of collectible in Free Roam is the ? Panels, large yellow ? panels that you’ll need to drive over. The good news is, the game does track these (unlike the P Switch Challenge Missions and Peach Medallions) and you’ll have find them in the circuits themselves, where they’ll have at least five panels for most of them. Once again, you’ll find the location of every ? Panel in Mario Kart World on our interactive map.

Special Cup

This is perhaps the easiest part of the process to miss, as you may expect to unlock Mirror Mode after doing all of the above. This final step is crucial, however, as you need to see the Credits screen to get the unlock for Mirror Mode, and that only occurs after you complete Special Cup. So fire it up one more time, complete it, and you’ll finally get the notice that you’ve unlocked Mirror Mode, congratulations!

Mirror Mode in Free Roam

Yes, you read that right, you can access the entire world of Mario Kart World in Mirror Mode too, although there’s one further step you’ll need to perform every time you wish to activate it.

To begin with, make sure you meet the original requirements for Mirror Mode above and have the mode available in Single Player. Once this is done, head into Free Roam and select Peach Stadium to be in the perfect place to access the area you need for Mirror Mode.

(1 of 5) Head to Peach Stadium in Free Roam and drive forward.

Drive forward, and take a left up and follow the track until you reach a green pipe. Ignore this, however, and drop off just to the right of it to land on the roof of the stadium. Go forward a little and then turn to your left to spot a massive window with Peach on it. If you’ve fulfilled the above conditions, you’ll be able to drive through this and you’ll enter Free Roam’s Mirror Mode. If you wish to reset this at any point, simply drive through it again, or exit and reenter Free Roam.
