Those familiar with Dragon Quest will know about special keys that are required to open various chests and doors. The first one that you will come across in Dragon Quest II HD-2D Remake is the Thief’s Key. Technically, you can’t miss the Thief’s Key, as you will automatically get it during the main story, so you won’t have to worry about that. However, it will be a little ways into the game, as you won’t be able to obtain it until you reach the Moonbrooke portion of the story. This page will detail how to get the Thief’s Key, as well as where to backtrack to find all of the treasures you passed along the way.

You won’t be able to miss the Thief’s Key, as it’s given to you during the main story.

How to Get the Thief’s Key

As mentioned above, you won’t be able to get the Thief’s Key until you get to the Moonbrooke portion of the main story, which isn’t that long into the game. After hearing about the events that happened in Moonbrooke, you are sent to investigate if those reports are true. When you arrive at Moonbrooke, you will see that they are true, with the kingdom in shambles. Make your way to the inner chamber, where you view a cutscene, but you will hear a voice the directs you to the Swamp Shrine for your next destination.

The Swamp Shrine is located to the east of Moonbrooke and is easy to spot on the map, as it has a little poison pool around it. Go here and in the center will be "Ra's Mirror" iconRa’s Mirror, which you will need so take it with you. Normally, you wouldn’t really have a lead, but Caradoc mentions the town you passed on the way, which will be Moonahan. Here, there will be a dog walking around by the stairs blocked by the locked door. Speak to the dog to get a prompt to use Ra’s Mirror. By a bit of magic, the dog will turn into the Princess of Moonbrooke, Peronel!

(1 of 3) After visiting Moonbrooke for the first time, you will be directed to the Swamp Shrine.

At this point, a cutscene takes place and other than a spot in the middle that requires you to go outside to speak with Caradoc, there’s nothing else to do. At the end, Peronel will officially join your party and you’ll have three main objectives right now, which are to visit the three main kingdoms of Midenhall, Carrock, and Moonbrooke. To save a little bit of time, head to Moonbrooke first and go towards the upper right corner for a scene. At the end of this cutscene, you will obtain the Thief’s Key!

Thief’s Key Treasure Chests

With the Thief’s Key finally in your possession, you can use Peronel’s Zoom spell to revisit all of the locations where you might have seen the various locked doors and chests. This will not list any Thief’s Key stuff that you will find past this point. You will find a list of them all in the table below:
