Crimson Desert is a 2026 single-player action-adventure game developed and published by Pearl Abyss. Originally conceived as a prequel to Black Desert Online, it was reworked during development into a standalone title set in its own universe. The game launched on March 19, 2026, across macOS, PlayStation 5, Windows, and Xbox Series X/S, and saw strong early success, selling several million copies within its first weeks and receiving generally favorable reviews from critics.
The game takes place on the fictional continent of Pywel, a high-fantasy world shaped by ongoing conflicts and mysterious forces. Players assume the role of Kliff, a member of a mercenary group known as the Greymanes. As the story begins, the group is fractured following a devastating attack by a rival faction called the Black Bears. Kliff’s journey centres on surviving in a hostile world, reuniting with his scattered companions, and attempting to rebuild the Greymanes while pursuing those responsible for their downfall.
Gameplay is built around open-world exploration, with Pywel designed as a seamless and immersive environment. Players are free to travel across varied landscapes, encountering hostile creatures, rival factions, and dynamic events. Beyond combat, the game includes a range of activities such as fishing, cooking, hunting, and crafting, allowing players to interact with the world in ways that extend beyond its main conflicts. The design encourages exploration and experimentation rather than strictly linear progression.
Combat plays a central role and is driven by the game’s BlackSpace Engine. It combines melee attacks, magic, and environmental movement into a system focused on flexibility and player expression. Players can engage enemies on foot or horseback, use a variety of weapons enhanced with elemental effects, and take on large-scale encounters including boss battles against creatures such as dragons. Movement and traversal are integrated into combat, allowing players to approach encounters in different ways depending on their playstyle.
Critically, Crimson Desert was noted for the scale and visual quality of its world, as well as the ambition of its systems, particularly its combat. Reviewers frequently highlighted the freedom offered in exploration and encounters, although some found the game uneven in areas such as story and controls. Despite these criticisms, it was widely regarded as an ambitious open-world title, combining elements of action, sandbox gameplay, and large-scale fantasy exploration into a single experience.
With every boss feeling like an event down to the intricacies of the combat system and the mechanics of your foes, Crimson Desert is looking to be a game that you can lose countless hours to, and we’ve not even checked out the open-world yet!
