We have made landfall at the Sacrament of the Fallen. We are greeted by row upon row of solemn devotees, numbering hundreds. Some wear scant coverings or crude pigments, others completely nude.
Beyond them, Francis Aldrich stands atop a grand stone stairway, akin to a God gazing down on his subjects. There can be no mistaking it: he is master here. The whole spectacle is shocking, in a rather grotesquely awe-inspiring manner.
I am led through an underground network to a private chamber, where I presently await the evening’s feast, in our honor. These are a simple, ascetic people. The eerie glee with which they look upon me is far more unsettling than the atrocities at the river. This journey has been entirely surreal, my senses overwhelmed into numbness.
