Inspection Text
They came in the evening. Two men in dark suits, their faces unreadable, their words measured like a well-rehearsed script. They didn’t force their way in. No, that would have been too crude for men like them. Instead, they waited for me outside, just as the last embers of the sunset dipped behind the horizon.
“We need to talk,” one of them said, his voice smooth, practiced.
I said nothing. I let them follow me inside, let them stand in my kitchen. They didn’t touch the tea I offered, didn’t sit. Just watched me, like wolves in expensive wool coats. They spoke of duty, the greater good, and things far greater than the Vigil. They insisted that my cause was a relic and it wouldn’t survive what was coming. The other placed a thick envelope on the table. Inside were money, passports, and something else I didn’t dare touch, a promise or a warning.
They insisted I think about it, before leaving. I didn’t sleep that night, wondering whether I should inform Vitalis.
The envelope sat on the table, untouched.
