A Breakdown of the Extended Look at GTA VI

Rockstar provided an extended look at GTA VI and this article is a breakdown of that video.

Rockstar have shared an extended look at Grand Theft Auto VI, showing off a fair bit of gameplay. We will be going over what is in the long look, measuring out at about 26 minutes, but won’t be talking about every single minute detail.

During the opening parts, we see both Jason and Lucia go to some building to pick up a package for Boobie Ike, a supporting character in the game. After being let inside, they walk over to the elevator and mention a name, then get on an elevator. Once they reach the floor, we see our first instance of something interactable, a dog. It seems you have the option to Scold, Pet, or Study the dog. This is similar to what you could do with animals in Red Dead Redemption 2, where studying animals unlocked a compendium entry. This is likely the case with GTA VI, too, although we don’t know too much about any potential systems in the game just yet.

Yes, you can pet the dog, and there seems to be a morality system in the game.

Note that when Jason pets the dog, a little face appears on the right side of the screen, with an angelic halo above it. This might be some kind of morality system, where you can be good or bad, depending on certain scenarios. Not too long after this, things go south and we get to the first gunfight of the video, where we see Jason take out some officers. While walking out of the room, he grabs a shotgun and uses that throughout the rest of the segment, along with switching back to the pistol once or twice. The segment ends after we see Lucia climb out of a window in some older lady’s apartment.

The next scene has Jason and Lucia at their own place, where they are getting ready for some party. While Lucia gets dressed in the bathroom, Jason walks into the living room area and checks the fridge, where we get an option of choosing one of several beverages. Some of these have icons next to them, although we don’t know what they mean. Jason then watches some TV, which include some commercials, before transitioning to a driving sequence that leads into a short montage that shows off not too much. It does seem like Lucia and Jason will be able to rob a number of different stories throughout the game, as the next montage shows.

Police Chase

The next sequence has Lucia bringing a car to someone, with the scene getting a little crazy. Lucia is driving the getaway car, while Jason climbs into the back to fend off the authorities. This is typical GTA at this point, with Jason shooting at all of the cop vehicles, blowing out their tires and causing them to lose control. In the upper right corner is the traditional six-star wanted level, with the current mission taking you to four stars. We saw a helicopter at the beginning, the police cruisers and a truck all chasing after you.

At some point, there’s a short scene with Lucia cutting into an alley, losing the police for a few. The game lets you control Lucia at this spot, when a cop car sees you in the alley, so you’ll have to drive now. You pull into a parking garage, switching over to another vehicle, ending the sequence after another short drive. This section seems to suggest that the protagonists are joining someone’s crew of some sorts, setting them up for a variety of jobs.

We also saw the typical police chase, complete with you fending them off.

Activities

While it’s not clear what exactly is something you’ll be able to do in the game, the montage after the above showcases a lot of different things. It starts with your characters driving a fanboat in a swamp area, then moves to Jason shooting a basketball and a quick glimpse at some underwater exploration. It also seems you can lift weights, ride jet skits, do some kayaking, and a lot more. There’s also a brief glimpse of the familiar strip club, with it looking like both Jason and Lucia enjoying the shows there.

There are also various shots of you participating in races, one in a normal car and another on a dirt bike. Playing up that Bonnie and Clyde storyline, you will be able to rob a variety of stores, and even do some target practice minigame. One of the biggest things to take away from this selection of many scenes is the ability to seamlessly switch to the other character with the press of a few buttons. This can happen during the middle of missions, where you can switch from one character driving, to the other controlling the weapon. It’s not clear if this is possible during every single mission, but we see another instance where Lucia jumps off of a building and opening her parachute, then switches to Jason who is in another part of the city.

There will be a large variety of vehicles in the game!

Another mission, where you act as some bodyguards for a man named Andres. A little bit of driving, then it cuts to the building with the party, with some other clips thrown into the mix. Some story stuff will take place here, then eventually, armed men crash the place and you’re going through and doing the usual. The gunplay looks pretty normal, with the tried and true that is expected from GTA here. You do eventually see Jason slow down time with an ability, which uses a gauge underneath your health bar. This is similar to Michael’s ability in GTA V, with the meter replenishing over time. Once the fight sequence is over, there’s one more montage to close out the extended look!
